Guess my age, said the little boy,

With a brand-new cap gun for a toy,

I can tie my shoes, and play with sticks,

Now, am I five or am I six?

Good-bye now.”

The line went dead.

Andre’s jaw dropped. He brought both hands to his head and said, “Holy shit.”

“What’s the matter?” Giselle asked.

“Didn’t you hear the riddle?”

“Guess my age…”

“The last line. Repeat the last line.”

Giselle nonchalantly said, “Am I five or am I six?”

“Not, ‘Am I five or am I six,’ but ‘MI5 or MI6?’”

“What?”

“Haven’t you ever seen a James Bond flick? MI stands for military intelligence. MI5 is the British domestic intelligence. It’s their version of the FBI, and MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service, does foreign intelligence.”

“Like the CIA,” Giselle said. “No wonder the British ambassador came to the morgue in person.”

“And tried to pass you that cheesy story about Ethan being an attaché.”

“And was in such a hurry to have me wrap up the autopsy and release the body.”

“Let me ask you something,” Andre said. “How did you know to ask about the Cayman Islands?”

Giselle shrugged. “Dumb luck. Last night, Darcy told me that Evelyn had mentioned something about wanting to take a year off in the Cayman Islands. And this morning I got this.” Giselle fished her cell phone out of her purse and tapped the text message icon before handing the phone to Andre.

He looked at the screen. “Who’s the girl?”

Before her mental self-editor could turn on, she said, “Do you find her attractive?”

Andre chuckled. “What, are you jealous now?”

“Why would I be jealous?”

“I’m the FBI. I’ve got to know who the girl is.”

“I don’t know who she is. It says, ‘Island Girl.’ For some reason, it made me remember what Darcy had said about the Cayman Islands.”

“Who sent this to you?”

Giselle raised an eyebrow. “Who do you think?”

Andre read out loud, “Your (not so secret) admirer?”

Giselle tilted her head. “Are you jealous?”

Andre burst into an unshackled laugh that made his chest heave and exposed his perfect pearly whites. “Jealous of a serial killer? I don’t think so.” He looked at the phone’s screen again. “This girl is something else, though, isn’t she? She’s got some attitude, right? Some spunk. She looks like she’s about to film a hip-hop video.”

“I’ll ask my secret admirer to give you her number if you’d like.”

“Name and number. I need her name; in case I want to put her in handcuffs.”

Giselle closed her eyes and shook her head with a broad smile. “I could say something, but I won’t.”

The office door opened without a knock. A tearful Jolene stepped inside, slowly, shakily, holding a clump of tissue over her nose.

Giselle was startled by the sight of her personal assistant. “Jolene, what’s the matter?”

Jolene tried to settle herself with several deep breaths and finally was able to utter, “It’s Hank. “He’s been shot.”
